A quick guide to new window installation

January 23, 2020

It is true to say that every house is incomplete without windows. Windows act as a bridge between the exquisite outdoors and the inside of the house. Your house is well-lit and ventilated due to the presence of windows. Typically, windows come as part of your house but sometimes, you will have to install a new window because of some damage or if you want it in a different location. A new window installation can be of two types. The first one is when the frame is built for the window to get installed, which is generally done by your builder. The second method is when you replace a window that has been installed with a replacement window.

Why do you need a new window installation?

There can be many reasons because of which you will have to replace your windows or indulge in a complete home window installation. Following are the most common reasons:

  • Your window might be cracked because of a recent calamity, small accidents like a tree falling on your window or long-term usage.
  • There can be water seeping through the windows during the rainy season or due to water dripping from the pipelines running along the walls.
  • You might want a change of home decor to enhance the aesthetics of your home interiors.
  • There can be security concerns because of gaps in the window or an issue in the locking system.

A new home window installation guide

You can install new windows by yourself or you can hire an expert for help. In case you are planning to install a window from scratch with the frame, it is recommended that you reach out to a window installation service, as it is a tricky and tedious process. However, it is advisable that someone stays at home to supervise the work. However, ensure that you do not disturb their work. Remember to stay within calling distance so that they can reach out to you in case of doubts and for you to express your needs properly.

If you are installing a new window, then here are the steps your experts will follow:

  • Cut out a frame for a new window, or if there’s an existing frame that is damaged, remove it and install a new frame.
  • Installing a new frame is completely taken care of by the professionals.
  • Once the frames are set, it takes about 30-50 minutes to install each window.

How to go about installing replacement windows

Many people prefer installing replacement windows by themselves because it is budget-friendly and convenient. Here is a step-by-step guide for installing a new window.

  1. Measure the window opening space to know what size of windows to buy.
  2. The 3/4th extension space of the window, covering the space between the wall and the interior face of the windows is called the Trim and jamb extension. Gently remove it with the help of required tools.
  3. Once you have removed the trim and jamb extension, there is a window jamb that needs to be detached. This is different from the jamb extension mentioned previously. The window jamb is the vertical and horizontal support of the window that prevents it from falling. The window comes off with the window jamb, so ensure that you remove it carefully without dropping it or banging it against the wall.
  4. Place the new window into the opening and support the jambs by placing wood pieces below the horizontal one. This will keep the new window in place. Drill holes into the sides of the unit and attach the window to the jamb.
  5. Ensure that there aren’t any gaps. Make sure to feel for any gaps and add foam insulation, if needed.
  6. After you ensure that the window is fixed properly, reinstall the jamb extension and window trim.
  7. Ensure that the nail holes are filled and also paint the windows to make it look appealing.
